Basileios, imperial spatharios and protonotarios of the metaton of Phrygia, late 9th-early 10th century. Seal (Lead, 25 mm, 13.04 g, 12 h). +KЄ ROHΘЄI Tω Cω ΔOVΛω Large patriarchal cross on four steps, within dotted circle. Rev. RACIΛIω / R’ CΠAΘ’ S AN/OTAP, TON MH/TATON ΦP/VΓHAC in five lines. Cf. for this office DO III, 95.1-2 and Zacos/Veglery 3115. Broken in halves and glued back together, otherwise, good very fine.

The metaton of Phrygia was a major state ranch where horses and pack animals were being bred for the Byzantine army. It was headed by a protonotarios, who was subject to the logothetes of the Herds. Another metaton was active in the province of Asia, as evidenced by a seal of its protonotarios (Zacos/Veglery 3077A, reading 'Archelaos, imperial spatharios and protonotarios of the metaton of Asia')
